Member Advocacy

School Water Funding: NJ schools can apply for funding to purchase drinking water filters through the School Lead Filters Program.

Advocacy Actions:

Check the lead in drinking water test results on your school district’s website. Was lead found? If yes, what did the school do about it?
Contact your school administrator and Board of Education to request that they apply for this funding to remediate any lead found. Use our outreach template.
Attend your local board of education meeting and ask if the district is applying.

Share the LFNJ press release with your local media

NJ State Budget Advocacy: Lead-Free NJ partners and members are raising awareness about proposed budget resolutions to fund lead exposure prevention in the FY27 NJ State Budget. LFNJ Partners have elevated the following to the LFNJ Advocacy and Steering Committees.

BR 276 for dedicated lead remediation revenue via the Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund, sponsored by Senator Zwicker. Action Alert Link.

BR 146, sponsored by Senator Greenstein & BR 407 sponsored by Assemblyman Schaer, for $2 million to distribute point-of-use water filters for homes known or suspected to have elevated lead levels.

BR 167 sponsored by Senator Greenstein for $7 million to restore State Revolving Fund funding to $60 million, enabling NJ to maximize federal investments in water infrastructure. Action Alert Link.

Community Hub Happenings

In collaboration with East Trenton Collaborative and Lead-Free NJ, Princeton University students tested 24 homes in Trenton for lead in water, paint, and soil. Participating residents were provided with their home results along with cleaning supplies and connections to resources at a report-out meeting in May.

The HUUB in Orange provided water pitcher filters certified to reduce lead in drinking water at the Orange Community Baby Shower!	LFNJ Community Hub Emeritus, Newark Water Coalition, hosted its first annual Community Science Symposium with NJIT. Community advocates and academic researchers discussed ways to center community voices in science.

Lead-contaminated paint, water, and soil, and other sources disproportionately affects young children, causing serious medical and behavioral issues into adulthood, and low-income communities and/or communities of color are most at risk, due to systemic inequities. However, these issues can be prevented by targeting the sources of lead. Working together as Lead-Free NJ, an inclusive and equitable collaborative focused on removing lead from New Jersey’s environment, we can address this complex problem on a larger scale than any individual or organization can alone. The time is now to demand action and organize for state-wide lead remediation in every home, childcare facility, school, and water system.
